CJSL 4v4 D-League Games

For ages U7-U8, the CJSL 4v4s are fun, development-focused games designed to put players first. There are no scores or standings—just fast-paced, small-sided play that emphasizes creativity, ball control, and learning through the game itself. With flexible training, inclusive teams, and 10-player rosters, every participant gets meaningful touches, smart decision-making moments, and a supportive, positive environment.

Player Development Philosophy

CJSL’s 4v4 D-Games focus on player development, creativity, and enjoyment over results. By removing scores and standings, we create an environment where young players can explore the game, take risks, and build skills without the pressure of winning. The emphasis is on learning, teamwork, and fostering a lifelong love for soccer.

More Touches on the Ball Increases skill development and confidence.
Better Decision-Making Faster play improves awareness and quick thinking.
Increased Involvement Every player is active and engaged throughout the game.
Improved Teamwork Small teams encourage passing, support, and communication.
More Fun & Less Pressure A relaxed, enjoyable environment for learning and creativity.
4v4 D-Games Format
Season Playdates: Each season includes 4 scheduled play events.
Event Scheduling: CJSL assigns host dates and schedules all 4v4 games in GotSport.
U7-U8 Division Structure: Each 4v4 division will consist of 4-5 teams, with 3-4 teams selected to host at least one playdate.
Game Format: Each team will play 3-4 games of 20 minutes per playdate, with a 3-5 minute break between matches. Subject to change based on field and time constraints.
Additional Notes:
  • All teams must have approved rosters at all games.
  • All players must be registered as Travel Players through GotSport using the same procedure as travel player registration.
4v4 Hosting & Scheduling

CJSL assigns each host club a host date and is responsible for building and posting all 4v4 game schedules in GotSport.

Host clubs must confirm their assigned host date and submit all required field information through the CJSL 4v4 Host Form.

  • Host Date: Confirm the host date assigned by CJSL.
  • If Your Assigned Date Does Not Work: You may select a different host date, provided the new date does not conflict with another host date already assigned within your division. Before selecting an alternate date, check the Division Alignment Spreadsheet and confirm that the date is available.
  • Field Location: Provide the complete field name and location.
  • Field Availability: Secure a minimum of 2-2.5 hours of continuous field time, including setup, games, and breakdown.
  • Field Setup: Confirm that the field will be properly set up and ready for 4v4 play.
  • Game Balls: Size 3 game balls must be available.
  • Field Permit: Confirm that the field is permitted and available for the full date and time submitted.
  • Safety: An AED must be available on site and all CJSL field and safety requirements must be followed.

Once the completed Host Club Information Form is received, CJSL will build the schedule, post the games in GotSport, and assign referees. Teams may play at different host locations throughout the season based on the scheduled playdates and available host fields.

Important: Do not assume an alternate host date is available. Always check the Division Alignment Spreadsheet before submitting a different date. Incorrect or incomplete host information may delay scheduling.

Once games are scheduled, teams are expected to be available for their assigned games.

4v4 Standards of Play
  • U7/U8 Events: Duration is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours of active play.
  • Restarts: Free kicks, throw-ins, goal kicks, and corner kicks are used to start or restart play.
  • Goal and Corner Kicks: Should be taken near the respective goal or corner.
  • Free Kicks: If used, all free kicks are indirect.
  • Opponent Distance: Opponents must be 9 feet (3 yards) away from the ball on all restarts.
  • Scoring: Goals must be scored from the attacking half of the field.
  • No Penalty Kicks, No Offside Rule
  • No Goalies - No player should be "parked" near the goal to "protect" or act as a "goalie." Players at this age want to be active, and restricting them to one position is not fun. In the modern game, players must understand and learn to play multiple positions.

  • Represent the Club and League Well – Uphold integrity, professionalism, and inclusivity.
  • Encourage Positive Parent Involvement – Teach parents to stay neutral, cheer respectfully, and support all players.

Parents Role
  • Encourage parents to model good sportsmanship and self-discipline for all.

  • Parents need to know that verbal and physical abuse is not part of our game or youth sports.

  • Encourage parents to complete The Sideline Project Parent Pledge.
The Sideline Project

CJSL 4v4 Development League – The Sideline Project

Parents Must Complete The Sideline Project Course & Pledge (U7-U8 4v4 D-League)

The Sideline Project was created by Soccer Parenting to address negative sideline behavior in youth sports. It recognizes that the actions and words of parents, coaches, and spectators can directly impact player development, referee retention, and the overall enjoyment of the game.

CJSL has adopted The Sideline Project for all U7/U8 teams to ensure our youngest players enjoy a fun, respectful, and supportive environment. This 15-minute online course and pledge—created by Soccer Parenting—educates parents, coaches, and spectators on positive sideline behavior. By reducing yelling, criticism, and negativity, and increasing encouragement and respect for referees, we help our 4v4 D-League players focus on learning, growing, and loving the game.
